U14s NLD Champions,

Newark Under-14s topped a fantastic season when they became ‘back to back’ NLD Champions, beating Stamford 17-10 in this year’s final on Sunday 19th April at Market Rasen & Louth Rugby Club.

As reigning champions, having won last year’s final against Derby, it was always going to be a challenge to repeat such a feat this season and things didn’t start the way they’d hoped.

With 10 minutes gone, they were two tries down and their play was littered with errors and poor decisions. However, their nerves were soon settled when Tom Evans scored a superb individual try that started deep in his own half.

Having outpaced the covering defence he was tackled over the line claiming the try but sustaining a head injury that was sadly the end of his involvement in the game.

Even without the potent Evans, Newark started to take control and play the style of rugby that had got them to the final. This resulted in a try for No. 8 James Brogden, who chased a well-weighted grubber kick through from captain and fly half, Jonny Law. Law converted, making the half time score 12-10.

Within minutes of the restart, Newark were on the attack again and a well worked move saw substitute winger Will Bero dive in at the corner for the crucial score. As the game wore on, Newark tightened their defence and stranglehold on the game, with Stamford never really looking like scoring.

As the last few tense minutes were played out, Stamford knew they only needed a converted try to take the game into extra time. However, Newark held their nerve and a hook against the head in the last scrum of the game saw them clear the ball off the field and celebrate the final whistle.

Adam Doran, Head Coach, commented: “To repeat what we achieved last season is very special – not many teams win one NLD title, let alone two in consecutive years! The boys deserve a huge amount of credit for all the hard work and effort they have put in this season and should be very proud of what they’ve achieved.”

Newark Under 14’s NLD Squad:
James Stimson; Dan Godfrey; Will Dove; Will Seage; Will Mason; Nathan Gooney; Dan Walker; James Brogden; Sam Booth; Jonny Law; Toby Taylor; Danny Wilson; James Harding; Tom Evans; Ed Armstrong; Joe Busby; Jacob Pearson; Alex Morgan-Smith; Matt Thompson; Noah Clegg; Will Bero.
