Tribute to Mike Edlin RIP

The club is sad to hear of the death of former 1st XV scrum half Mike Edlin who played for the club and gained representative honours in the late 1960s.

Nick Maltby, a former club captain and vice president, recalls Mike as one of the best players in the club’s history.

“Mike was one of, if not the best player I ever had the privilege to play alongside,” he recalled.

Mike was an ever present in the Newark 1st XV in the highly successful mid to late 60’s when Newark won the Notts Cup on four occasions.

He regularly represented Notts, Lincs and Derbyshire. As reported in the Nottingham Evening Post, NLD v Warwickshire: “Warwickshire, with six internationals, no doubt came to Beeston with the notion that bottom of the table NLD would be a pushover.

“The 3 Counties, especially Edlin, who was not at all overshadowed by England scrum half Bill Gittings, played adventurous, attacking rugby.”

The thoughts of the club are with Mike’s family and friends. His funeral is being held in Driffield, Yorkshire, on Friday March 31, 11.30am, at East Riding Crematorium, Langtoft, Driffield, East Yorkshire, YO25 3BL.
