The evening proved to be a big success despite the cold weather
Newark 17 RAF Hawks 17
A late try by wing James Stark gained Newark a share of the honours in a successful charity match at Kelham Road against the RAF Hawks.
The RAF overturned a half-time deficit of 12-5 to grab the lead through two second-half tries.
Newark fought back in the closing stages to draw level thanks to an excellent move which finished in Stark touching down. Jon Webster scored both his team’s tries in a first half which they dominated.
The evening proved to be a big success despite the cold weather. Staged in memory of Corporal George Crawford, the Newark first team player, who was killed in 1985, it is hoped more than £750 will be raised for the Newark Patriotic Fund, the charity formed to help local service personnel.
Members of George’s family attended the evening including brother Lawrence who presented the trophy afterwards to captains Chris Tate and Matt Clark.
Thanks to all the players including the Newark and Southwell under-12s who provided the curtain raiser.
