U18 Girls Through to National Final
The Sisterhood Continues to Conquer.
Newark travelled to Lichfield to battle it out against Castleford and Worcester for a place in the National Final.
Little old Newark took on these two giants of girl’s rugby, Castleford, with girls who play both codes, and Worcester with connections to the premier league club.
The draw for the order of play this year it was favourable to Newark, as we pulled the first and last game.
Castleford were first up and in a highly contested first five minutes Castleford broke out of defence and scored against the run of play. This speared on the Newark girls as they bounced back to score under the post and shortly after again in the corner before half time. The second half was a tense affair as both defences worked overtime to stop any attack. Eventually Newark broke through to score again under the posts. 19-5 to Newark.
A short break and a chill out and a chance for some high energy food (skittles), saw the girls take on Worcester in a winner takes all game.
They were a highly skilled side with quick backs and great organisation around the break down area, giving our girls a difficult challenge to cope with. The girls dominated the first half running in two tries and converting both, this became crucial by the end. The second half saw Worcester come out and score under the posts and converted. Game on. The next ten minutes was probably the tensest ten minutes I’ve ever witnessed as both sides attacked and counter attacked. Newark’s defence was breached and Worcester scored out wide. The conversion was missed, but only just.
Not long left as the game re started and Worcester threw everything at little old Newark and as always, the girls pulled together and held out. 14-12 to Newark.
The girls had done it. Reaching the National Final for the first time as a under 18s side, and only the second year of fielding an u18 girls team. The second time Newark have produced a girls team that have made a National Final.
A massive achievement to the girls, coaching staff and back room staff.
