NLD Shield Final at Worksop
Newark 17 Glossop 34
Newark’s season ended in disappointment at Worksop on Sunday when Glossop won the final of the NLD Shield by four tries to one.
A second-half try by scrum-half Matt Clark came too late to turn a match in which Glossop edged clear around half-time.
Centre Matt Cox had given Newark an early lead through the first of his four penalty goals in the seventh minute.
Newark created two good chances in the first few minutes but failed to take them and Glossop levelled in the 24th minute.
A second penalty from Cox put Newark ahead again only for Glossop to score their first converted try.
Cox struck a third penalty just before half-time to cut Glossop’s lead to 9-10 but a second try by the Derbyshire team gave them a 17-9 lead at the interval.
After the teams exchanged penalties at the start of the second half, Glossop grabbed the crucial score in the 53rd minute after some loose play by Newark.
Glossop converted the try to lead 27-12 and maintained the advantage until the 74th minute when Clark pounced.
That try gave Newark some hope of a comeback at 17-27 but Glossop escaped again in the closing minutes to make sure.
