Midlands One East
Syston 83 Newark 14
Newark’s Easter trip to Syston proved to be a painful affair against a dominant team who lead Midlands One East on points difference from Scunthorpe.
Two tries from wing Jamie Eveleigh kept Newark in the match until the hour mark when Syston sprinted clear by amassing some 49 points in the last quarter.
Syston had led 29-14 at the interval and had only scored one more try in the first 20 minutes of the second half when Newark were unhinged by the sin binning of outside-half Matt Cox.
Eveleigh had struck twice in the first half from counter attacking moves involving Joe Cormack, Alex Moore and Jon Webster. The wing converted both tries as well.
A depleted Newark team, without the unavailable Lewis Cove and Budda Waqalevu, were also hit by injuries when Webster had to be substituted in the first half after he was knocked out.
Newark have a chance to atone for the display next Saturday in the final home league game of the season, against Matlock, kick off 3pm.
