REPORT WRITTEN BY ROB WILDMAN
Sunday 1st May
Two tries in quick succession towards the end of the first half gave Newark hope of winning this hectic Notts Cup final against Paviors at Southwell.
Those tries by centre Aloesi Waqalevu and Alex Scott gave Newark a 24-21 lead at half-time in a game which produced 10 tries – Paviors eventually winning through by six tries to four.
Newark paid for a poor start to the second half when Paviors scored three tries to build a 36-24 lead.
To the credit of Newark they responded very determinedly in the final quarter to worry Paviors after Scott had scored a second try by winning a race to touch down his own chip ahead.
Scott had a memorable match because his first-half effort was a brilliant individual try, the full-back having the pace to outrun the Paviors cover after Newark had won a midfield turnover thanks to a powerful tackle by Waqalevu.
The centre had minutes earlier scored a good try himself to give Newark hope after an opening half hour had seen Paviors take a 21-10 lead.
Newark had kept in touch via a penalty from Dan Mackie plus a try from No 8 Dave Garland which Mackie converted.
