A new season opened at Kelham Road and this friendly featured some competitive and combative rugby on a muggy afternoon.
Newark finished up winners from a match split into quarters but had to stage a speedy comeback to overtake a powerful Tupton unit.
The Derbyshire team, newly-promoted to Midlands Three East North, played some effective rugby to lead 21-10 at half-time, scoring three tries to two.
Newark, who had kept in touch via tries from forwards Mason Coulam and Ed Poulson, needed the injection of some pace through scores by Billy Charles and Will Britten plus a muscular effort from James Price.
Besides the contribution of some regular faces, Newark also fielded a good number of senior colts to get the season underway.

Newark’s pre-season trip to Hinckley next Saturday (Aug 25) is subject to confirmation due to player availability.
