Newark 34 Syston 2nds 33
A late flourish earned Newark victory in their final pre-season friendly before league action begins next Saturday at home to Ashby kick off 3pm.
On a hot afternoon it was Newark’s backs who led the way ending in scrum-half Billy Charles scuttling through a tiring defence to score the winning try in the final minute.
Newark had fought back from a 33-19 deficit by scoring those tries from wing Josh Watts, who had scored in the first half, and newcomer Logan Watt.
Syston had dominated after half-time in building that lead and looked set for victory before Newark put on a final spurt.
Newark’s pace had brought an early lead through tries from wing Alex Henderson, captain Will Britten and Watts. Robbie Hunter-Shaw added two conversions.
Thanks to all the players especially props Ben Wells and Lee Gillatt who stepped up from the 3rd team trip to Sleaford.
