Newark 24 Newbold-on-Avon 53
A second-half revival helped Newark earn a much-needed bonus point in a tough game against one of the league’s promotion hunters.
Newbold’s stronger pack had paved the way for an away win by half-time when the Warwickshire team led 29-5, flanker Josh Hubbard having grabbed Newark’s first try.
Newark showed their fighting spirits after the interval in scoring three more tries to earn a bonus point for scoring four or more tries.
After substitute Dan Mackie had scooted in for his second try in two games, two of Newark’s most explosive players in Aloesi Waqalevu and Shaun May provided the fireworks for the Kelham Road faithful.
First, May stormed clear from halfway to score in the corner which Mackie, who had converted his own try, improved from near the touchline.
And Newark collected the bonus point from a tough afternoon when Waqalevu cut through the away defence to complete an excellent individual display.
Overall, though, Newark were well beaten up front and struggled to hold a Newbold team who have now won four games from five to be in third place behind Kettering and Derby.
Newark travel to Northampton Old Scouts next Saturday.
