Paviors 22 Newark 21

Newark missed a good chance of registering a win at Paviors who scored two tries midway through the second half to gain the upper hand.

However, Newark failed to consolidate on a 14-10 lead just after the interval and needed a late try from James Price to grab a losing bonus point.

Overall, it was a disappointing and scrappy match in which both teams scored three tries each.

Newark survived early Paviors pressure and had only conceded an opening penalty goal before Jaymie Duncan scored an excellent try, racing clear from inside his own half, which Dan Mackie improved.
The flanker surged through the Paviors midfield after Newark forwards had scrambled a turn over near the halfway line on the right.

Newark had to defend after that try and lost Mackie to the sin bin for a high tackle.
Paviors, who had missed a glorious chance earlier in the half, struck back through a converted try to lead 10-7 at the interval.

A much brighter start by Newark paid off and a try by Alosei Waqalevu, which Mackie converted from near the touchline, brought up a 14-10 lead.

It was another memorable score following Duncan’s try, Waqalevu forced his way through after setting up the attack through a well-judged chip and catch.

However, Newark’s hopes of success faded dramatically when they conceded two tries within three minutes. The second was another good individual effort though the visitors were left questioning their defence.

A conversion of that try put Paviors 22-14 up and Newark could not really establish enough pressure to overturn that lead until Price burst through off Matt Clark’s pass in the final move of the match.
Luke Tupholme converted, by dropping the goal, but the referee blew for full time.

Newark host Bedford Athletic next Saturday, kick off 2.15pm, at Kelham Road.

Scoring sequence (Paviors first): 3-0, 3-7, 10-7 (ht), 10-14, 15-14, 20-14, 22-14, 22-19.
