Newark stuck to their task throughout

By

Newark could have grabbed a second

Saturday March 23
Midlands Two East North
Melbourne 41 Newark 5

A bright spell early in the second half gave Newark hope of pushing league leaders Melbourne.

When No 8 Dave Garland burrowed over from a line-out drive Newark were 22-5 down and giving the Derbyshire team something to think about.

However, it was Melbourne who finished the more dominant. They scored three more tries in the final quarter to complete their 18th league win of the season. It also clinched the title and promotion.

Newark stuck to their task throughout and deserved one or two more tries for some good spells of play.

The first half had seen the home team start strongly and Newark hindered by a leg injury for lock Jaymie Duncan.

He was eventually forced off giving an opportunity to Logan Watt in a reshuffled pack.

Melbourne led 19-0 at the interval and added a further penalty before Newark found their best form leading to the try for Garland.

Newark could have grabbed a second but a powerful run by Spurr and a break by Matt Cox could not be finished off.

Newark team v Melbourne: Hunter-Shaw; Taylor, Birch, Spurr, Booth; Cox, Overland; Hempstead, Chapple, Coulam, Matthysz, Duncan, Brogden, Seage, Garland.

Subs: Godfrey, Watt, Cove.
