Newark hopefully ends a difficult period of poor performances.

Midlands One East North

Market Bosworth 3 Newark 33

Newark started the New Year in the best possible manner by producing their most decisive rugby for two months in winning at Market Bosworth.

A quick start left Bosworth thoroughly deflated and Newark had the match won by the break, having scored three tries to lead 23-3.
A fourth try after the interval gave the visitors the added reward of a bonus point as well.

An excellent team performance was led by prop Shaun May whose powerful surge in the 15th minute broke the Bosworth resilience to pave the way for Newark’s first league win in two months.
Newark were well served by halfbacks Danny Coen and Matt Clark plus the ball-winning ways of a hungry pack.

May stormed clear from just inside the Bosworth 22 to score under the posts. Danny Coen added the conversion to go alongside an opening penalty after Newark had started in a determined mood.

Bosworth’s only points came after Coen’s opening penalty and May’s try was followed by scrum-half Matt Clark finishing off another attack in the 20th minute.
After Coen had collected a second penalty in the 25th minute, full-back Mark Byrom scored Newark’s best try of the match in the right corner after some good passing and support.

The second half was a low-key affair as Bosworth, apart from some early pressure, never threatened to cut into Newark’s lead which was extended 10 minutes into the half when Byrom finished off for his second try and his team’s fourth.

Coen failed to land the difficult conversion but had the final say in the match by kicking his third penalty goal in the closing stages.

Victory for Newark hopefully ends a difficult period of poor performances against lower-ranked teams and near misses against promotion hopefuls.
Newark play their first home match of 2013 next Saturday (Jan 12) when Loughborough visit Kelham Road, kick off 2.15pm.

The league action continues the following week as the match against Peterborough, which was postponed before Christmas due to flooding, is set to be re-staged.
