Syston 61 Newark 0
Newark put in plenty of effort and resilience on a difficult afternoon against league leaders Syston.
A good second-half spell should have brought Newark points only for a succession of attacks to be halted.
Newark paid for two poor periods which allowed Syston to run up a more comfortable score than they deserved, winning by eight tries to nil.
Newark, playing against the worst of the elements, looked to be heading for a reasonable first-half performance, Syston only leading 13-0 going into the final five minutes of the opening period.
However, Syston, who had scored their first try in the eighth minute, found their attacking stride to score three more tries in the run up to the half-time whistle to turn round 32-0 ahead.
A further penalty by Syston increased the lead early in the second half. Newark then enjoyed their best period and should have taken advantage of two close-in scrums and a good attack out on the left led by wing Ben Usher.
Newark were also penalised for obstruction in the lead up to another attack and from then on Syston took control again.
The home team clinically punished a tiring defence to score four tries in the last 10 minutes to complete the win.
Newark face another difficult encounter on Saturday when second-placed Old Northamptonians visit Kelham Road, kick off 2.15pm.
