Paviors 38 Newark 8
Newark’s difficult season continued at their Nottinghamshire rivals who dominated this league game to win by six tries to one.
Players and coaches were left talking about ‘what if’ especially an early breakout by wing James Challenger. He looked certain to score but for a good cover tackle by a home defender.
Newark did well in the early stages and played some good controlled rugby only for mistakes to cost them tries – Paviors breaking clear once followed by a score off a catch and drive from a line-out.
A third try, this time from a pushover at a scrum, in the first half left Newark 19-0 down before new fly half Harry Hinchley reduced the deficit by three in the run up to half-time.
Newark produced another good period of play straight after the interval, including the sight of giant lock Rory Williams striding clear down the left wing only to be stopped a few metres short.
Ex-Newark skipper Ed Collishaw, now in the Paviors midfield, received a yellow card for blocking possession at the ruck following Williams’ break-out.
A try for Newark looked certain but the home team survived the pressure and the chance was lost.
After that, Paviors scored a further two tries from pushover ploys to punish Newark fully for having back-rower James Price sin binned for an offside offence.
Those scores put the home team 31-3 in the lead before Mark Byrom grabbed a consolation score.
However, Paviors had the final say by scoring a sixth try in the closing minutes to finish a disappointing day for a big group of travelling support.
