REPORT WRITTEN BY JOCK MACKINNON
Newark travelled to the expected strong running side of Notts Uni with a side much changed through injuries and unavailability’s.
The anticipated early onslaught from the younger side had Newark 8 - 0 down at the mid way point in the first half. However, some very strong forward domination reaped the rewards as Newark fought back to end the half 14 - 8 up, tries coming from push over tries from Craig Hawes and Ben Ennels.
The second half had the Newark side again dominating play, through strong forward play and solid defensive resolve from the back line. Newark extended their lead with tries from Craig Hawes and the 'Poacher' Gareth Bartsch (Captain). All the tries were excellently converted by Jamie Eveliegh, which rounded off a man of the match performance from the young full back. The Uni side scored a couple of run away tries in the dying minutes of the game, however, scrum half Ben Ennels could have finished off an excellent afternoon for the Newark side with an interception, but was caught on the line with a very desperate tap tackle, which resulted in the ball being spilled from his grasp. The Newark side hung on for a much deserved and vital win.
