Thanks to a last minute call up for Sam Hutchinson Newark were able to field a competitive front row and arrived at Rasen ready to do battle.

A promising start from the Newark pack and a break from Neil Clarke set up James Dyson to register an early score. However for the next 15 minutes Newark found themselves pinned on their own line and only some great team defence held the opposition out. Although they did score a penalty.

5-3.

Having withstood all Rasen could throw at Newark, a break out saw Jonnie Statham score and then very shortly afterwards a break down the blind side provided James Stark with a further try.

17-3 to Newark at Half time.

Things continued to go Newark’s way and more good work from the Newark back row of Chapple/Fotheringham and Clarke saw a debut try for Joe Hare on the left wing and very shortly afterwards a second try from Joe made the scoreline 29-3.

Shortly afterwards, a great break out from veteran Martin Brummitt and some lovely interplay from the backs saw Brummitt score his first try in over 2 years and the game looked all over, but not so!

Newark took their 'foot off the pedal' and poor tackling let Rasen in for 2 quick scores

36-15 game on again.

Thankfully Newark responded and a hat trick try from Joe Hare eased Newark in front again. But to their credit Rasen did not give up and 2 further scores again from weak tackling by Newark particularly in the middle of the pitch made the score 41-25.

However with time running out some more really good attacking play saw Tom Price score his debut try and he converted it to make the final score 48-25.

Overall a very convincing and pleasing result - some great attacking rugby from the lads, but Newark will have to defend better than they did in the second half if they are to mount a challenge for the Pennant title this year.
