Gilinski bags 4 tries
After defeat last week against Derby it was important that the 2's got back to winning ways and Saturdays result did the job. However overall it was a rather poor performance even though the result was pleasing.
In a much changed starting line up because of first team call ups, injuries and unavailability’s Newark lost Josh Witton in the warm up and then to make things worse they started poorly, conceding a try in the first five minutes.
They responded with good interplay from youngsters Isaac Murphy, Max Spurr and eventually Dan Price scored to make it 7-5 to Newark.
Again sloppy defence from Newark let Moderns in for a second try 12-7 to Moderns.
Newark then started to play some decent free flowing rugby and a penalty from skipper Brummitt and 2 tries from Nick Gilinski (his first in over 3 years) and one from Sam Silbilski meant the half time score was 31-12.
Newark in total control and starting to dominate everywhere on the pitch. Newcomers Murphy and Barnard had both made impressive starts to their 2nd Xv debuts.
With an early score after half time from Gilinski to complete his hat-trick it looked like the flood gates would open!!
However poor defence from Newark and a lack of team work (individuals starting to do too much) and Moderns started to play some decent rugby, helped by Newark’s very poor first up tackling.
In the space of 15 mins they scored 3 tries and suddenly it was Newark 36 Moderns 29 and game on.
But to their credit, eventually, Newark rallied and three scores in quick succession- Gilinski, Silbilski and Dyson.
Final score Newark 51 Moderns 29
Not a game to remember but an important Pennant win nevertheless.
In the next 3 weeks we have Syston, Mansfield and Paviors and Newark will have to play a lot better if they are to keep winning-
Defence must improve!!!
