The predicted snow did not arrive and although Mansfield’s 3rd and 4th team pitches were unplayable due to frost, their 2nd team found that their playing surface was good and the surprise sunny and dry conditions were ideal for a youthful Newark 2nd Tea

Newark 2nd Team: Dunc Dawson (Sam Hutchinson), Tom Gilchrist, Rob Dunning, Mark Stains (Capt), Dan Price, Jed Chapple, Isaac Murphy, Alex Jackson, Matt Wooldridge, Jacob Andrews, Will Machin, Nick Galinski (Sam Sibilski), Martin Brummitt, James Stark, Richard Byrom (Bradley Eames).

Newark started strongly and pile pressure onto the home side from the kick off but desperate defence ensured the Mansfield line remained intact but their discipline lapsed after 7 minutes, giving away a penalty which Wooldridge stroked over to draw first blood. Three minutes later Newark ran the ball at the old enemy and Stark finished off a fine movement to score in the corner. The next try was only 2 minutes later, from receiving the kick Newark secured the ball and a great handling movement saw the ball pass through the hands of nearly all the Newark team with Wooldridge crossing the line and converting the try to take the score to 0 – 15.

Unfortunately some players then took their foot off the gas, thinking the game was won, and with only 13 minutes gone they let Mansfield back into the game. Their pride was dented and they assaulted the visitors line relentlessly and came close to scoring but for a great try stopping tackle by veteran full back Byrom, but alas, this saw the end of his participation in the game as he popped his shoulder and he had to be replaced by the returning Bradley Eames, back after nearly 12 months from a serious injury.

This was the shock that was required to stun Newark back into action and on 31 minutes they won a penalty 45 meters out which Wooldridge planted as if it was a mere formality. Shortly after a deep kick to Mansfield’s try line was picked up, but Nick Galinski was in hot pursuit and charged down the clearance attempt to score in the corner. Wooldridge of the golden boot slotted yet another and the score at half time was Mansfield 2nds 0 NRFC 2nds 25.

Sam Sibilski started the second half for Galinski moving Martin Brummitt into inside centre and after 0ne minutes play Will Machin received the ball just inside the Mansfield half and set off on a weaving dodging run to score a fine solo effort. Wooldridge converted.
Newark now had their tails up and 2 minutes later, fast ball and great handling saw Sibilski crossing the line with yet another conversion from Hawkeye Wooldridge. Score 0 – 39.

Will Machin scored his second and after 50 minutes of play Jacob Andrews crossed the line to bring up 49 points to nil, Wooldridge boot was slightly off for the conversions.

An injury to Dunc Dawson saw the arrival of Sam Hutchinson who quickly showed the merits in the scrum of having a specialist tight head prop. Sam is ot the most mobile prop but in the tight he is like an anchor!
Mansfield were now desperate to avoid the points tally racking up further and it defended well launching their own counter attacks which Newark contained through good tackling and it was not until the 66th minute that AJ at No 8, picked up the ball and charged 45 meters, sidestepping players up to the home teams line, making an off-load to the evergreen Staines who was stopped just short of the line. From the resultant 5 metre scrum, Wooldridge was fed and he crashed over for his second try and put his accurate boot back in line to take the extra points and the score to 56 points to nil.

From the restart Mansfield clawed their way back and in a rare attack they managed to stretch the Newark defence to score a good running try in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Newark were aggrieved with the surrender of the 5 points and put the pressure back on their game opponents. Galinski, on again for the worn out Eames, added to Mansfield’s woes when he went over under the posts to take the points tally with the conversion to 63 – 5. However the fat lady was not yet singing; another attack saw young Dan Price pick up his knees in a 20 meter sprint to the line, off- loading to Captain Staines for him to complete the rout with another try under the posts. The extras were added by Wooldridge to bring his personal points tally to 30 and the final score to 70 points to 5. Goodnight Mansfield. Bring on Paviors.
