Mat Cox opened the scoring with a fine penalty kick after 3 minutes but a sharp return by Ashbourne from the restart won them a penalty which they took quickly and caught Newark napping to take them into the lead with an unconverted try. This galvanised Newark into action and after pushing their opponents back into their own half a well place kick was followed up by Will Machin who tackled the ball taker and then the receiver from the offload and forced the defenders into giving away a penalty that Cox again stroked over to put Newark back into the lead at 6 points to 5.
This slim lead was all that the home side needed to have the confidence to lift their game and after some aggressive work by the forwards, Alex Jackson broke away on a storming run to be stopped just short of a score but he off-loaded to Max Spurr who made sure of the 5 points and after just 18 minutes of play the score board looked a little more comfortable at 11-5.
Newark were not going to rest on their laurels and were attacking deep into Ashbourne’s half when Machin took a quick throw in and a sharp handling move along the back line put Toby Edlin into space to outstrip the defence for a classic score. Cox added the extras and the lead was increased to 13 points.
Newark were now firmly in control and more good work by the forwards created room for the backs to put Nick Galinski into space, his strength and speed was too much for the defenders as he brushed off two tackles and sped for the line for his first try of the game and Newark’s third.
Quick hands from James Dyson, strong running and a PASS from James Price put Spurr over for his second Try and took Newark in at the break 30 points to 5 in the lead.
Two minutes into the second half Newark lost Joe Tinsley to a yellow card for a dubious “spear” tackle but Newark were unaffected and ran in their 4th try one minute later via James Stark , Coxie converted and the bonus point was in the bag. Newark were firmly in control and but for staunch defence from the visitors they could have rattled up a cricket score.
The small home crowd were treated to a display of running rugby with 3 further tries coming from Galinski (2 ), and Will Naylor. Ashbourne managed a second score when Newark took their foot of the pedal a little but the result was never in doubt with another fine Pennant win for the young side of 56 points to 12 and keeping them at the top of the Pennant table. A pleasing win was further enhanced with a brief return to the field of play by Craig Hawes and Dave Sheils. Hopefully these experienced players will now be featuring in the mix for the rest of the season.
