After a very late call on Thursday evening to accept the fixture and call ups to the first team we eventually arrived at Melton with 16 players (Grateful thanks to Rob Tiplady and Jonno Marshall who came up from the 3's at the last minute)
Good solid start from a very young side (with 1 or 2 notable exceptions).
Newark controlled things well and were it not for some handling errors very close to the the Melton try line they would have scored much earlier.
As it was a try from young scrum half James Dyson settled nerves and 25 minutes into the game Newark were looking very assured 19-0 up.
Coen, (his first game for over a year because of injury) Bartch and Gardener were controlling the break down and there were some good passages of play particularly involving the wingers Stark and Marshall. However, Eventually Melton got into their stride but some solid defensive work from Newark kept the score the same at half time.
After the break Newark really started to play as a team and 2 further scores from wingers Stark and Marshall gave the away team a comfortable cushion 29-0.
Unfortunately a lapse in concentration let Melton in for a try and it may have looked like a come back was on the cards- not so.
Newark responded by playing some very good controlled and expansive rugby and ran in a further 6 tries as Melton's defence tired under the warm sunny conditions.
Final score 61-5
11 tries and 3 conversions.
Good result and confidence builder- ready for Scunthorpe next week
