Newark 34 Kettering 5
Newark continue their good start to the season
Another impressive performance from Newark’s second string who maintained their winning unbeaten start to the season against a team that had beaten them last year.
On a pleasant afternoon at Kelham Road, Newark made a strong start and after good work from Man of the Match Dave Garland, Budda made a great break and finally released Craig Hawes to go over in the corner. Kettering tried to respond but Newark were dominant and after good interplay from forwards and backs Will Naylor released Richard Byrom to score. 10-0.
At this stage it seemed to be all one way traffic, but then the Kettering full back went half the length of the pitch to score and make it 10-5.
Game on.
Newark responded and just before half time James Stark scored after Newark had taken the ball against the head. Jack Badley converted.
The constant onslaught was taking its effect on Kettering and after 40 minutes they had lost three players and had to borrow Dermot O’leary to play as open side for them.
The second half was very similar to the first, Newark dominant and on the front foot. Kettering trying to desperately defend and so it was inevitable that more scores would follow.
Will Naylor dived over after the forwards had battered the Kettering line .
Mark Staines looked to have scored a fifth but then somehow managed to throw the ball away whilst going over the line. However he put things right 5 minutes later by scoring under the posts, Jack B converted making the score 29-5.
The game now became quite scrappy, Dave Garland also put on a Kettering shirt to play scum half (another injury to the opposition).
The game finally ended when Budda went over for the sixth try of the afternoon and make the final score Newark 34 Kettering 5.
Well done lads, Mansfield at home next week another tough challenge but one I know all the players are looking forward to
