Newark Started the second half in the same hard tackling, strong running way

Report written by Mark Staines.

Newark 2's 79 - 17 Old Northamptonians 2's

Newark had a few changes to the squad this week with Jamie Duncan making his first start for the second team at 8.

Newark started well with some good hard running from Brian Loftus and Max Spur in the centres. After Dan Wilson had scored a penalty Newark defended well and a loose ball found its way into Ted Bunn’s hands to score the first try of the game. 10-0.

Old Northamptonians then lost a couple of players to injuries, one later to be seen with a full length plaster on his arm, So as it was a friendly Dan Harrison swapped shirt and ran out for the away team.

Newark played some good team rugby and future scores for Jamie Duncan, Matt Wooldridge, Tom O’leary and Max Spurr gave Newark a comfortable lead before ON's scored a penalty to make the score 29-3. Newark where playing some great support rugby and worked the way down the pitch from there own 22 phase after phase with everyone involved before Brian Loftus found space on the blind side and a short pass to his Captain saw Mark Staines score in the corner 34-3 at half time.

Newark Started the second half in the same hard tackling, strong running way and James stark scored to start the second half.

There was another try for Mark Staines and Brian Loftus before Mark Byrom finished off another break from Budda ( Aloesi Waqalevu ) before Buds scored himself with a jinxing run with a big smile on his face as he sailed past Dan Harrison.

Dan then picked up on a loose ball to score for ON's which was converted 72-10.

Bryan Loftus then scored his second after a little chip into the corner which Stark caught before passing back inside to Loftus to score Newark's final try, converted by Dan Wilson 79-10.

With the game almost over ON's pushed for a try and some solid defending by Newark in their own 22 had thought they had kept them out only for the referee to award a penalty try converted with the last kick of the game 79-17.

A good solid performance in defence and some great attacking rugby by all, means a selection head ache for the double header game against Paviors next week.
