2nd XV Report v Bugbrooke
Won 20-5
The 2’s are back to winning ways
Having had no game last week it was off to Northampton to play Bugbrooke (for the first time ever) this week.
First team injuries and lots of players unavailable meant there were lots of changes- in came Dave Shiels, Shaun May, Tom Holmes, Ben Ennals, Tom Hill and the youngster Alan Staines.
The game started slowly and both sides made lots of basic mistakes. However eventually Newark took control of the game and after some good work from Bryan Loftus and a chip through the ‘sprightly’ Man of the match Ben Ennals dived on the loose ball to register the first score of the game, Dan Wilson added the extra 2 points.
Although Newark had a lot of possession they were unable to convert their pressure into extra points.
Bugbrooke defended very well and on their first visit into Newark’s 22 they caught the ball at the line out and drove over to make the score 7-5.
Half time and a few stern words from skipper Staines, who asked for more patience and the need to construct more phases in their approach play.
The players duly responded and Newark dominated the second half.
Lots of good controlled play and two penalties from Wilson gave Newark some breathing space 13-5.
Eventually all the pressure paid off and after some strong forward runs, a break down the blind side, saw the ball in Mark Staines hands who showed great pace and a lovely side step to beat the full back and go under the posts.
It was his ninth try of the season and probably his best.
This was the final action of the game and so it finished Newark 20 Bugbrooke 5.
