2nd XV Report v Market Rasen
Won 49-5
Second half hat trick for winger Tom Hill
As expected with all second team games there were enforced changes to the starting team. The most notable being the versatile Tom ‘cannonball’ O’Leary who having played tight head prop last week moved to full back this week.
Newark started strongly and after some good forceful play from their forwards, Matt Cove threw an outrageous dummy and crashed over for the first try after only 3 minutes.
This dominance in the forwards continued throughout the first half and it was not long before Newark had doubled their lead when Mark Staines burst through to claim his eleventh try of the season.
Next on the score sheet was scrum half Ben Ennals who took a quick penalty five metres out and scampered over.
However Rasen bounced back and after some good play from their forwards the ball was moved wide and from a chip though, the full back scored. 15-5.
Then just before half time a good drive from the forwards and a well-timed incisive run from Bryan Loftus gave Newark their fourth try and a bonus point. Young Tom Cole who was making his debut at Fly Half for the 2’s converted to make the half time score 22-5.
Changes were made at half time and within 10 minutes of the restart 2 of the replacements had scored tries.
Firstly, Hugh Faulkner, who came on in the centre and then Tom Hill who came on the wing also scored.
Newark were now coasting at 32-10.
From the restart, Newark caught the ball and kicked long, Rasen replied by kicking the ball back, the ball was caught by Tom Hill in his own half and he then set off on a brilliant 60 metre run beating 4 or 5 Rasen players before diving over the line under the posts.
Tom Cole added the extra 2 points.
Newark were completely in control, Man of the match, Max Spurr was dominant in midfield making some great runs and some big tackles.
Following one of his runs prop Devan Priestly found himself in some space and broke 2 tackles to drive his way over the line.
Finally Tom Hill completed the scoring by getting his hat trick with the final play of the afternoon.
Final score Newark 49 Rasen 5.
Overall a good team performance from the 2’s, but as skipper Staines said at the end of the game there are always areas for improvement.
Next week its Matlock away.
