REPORT WRITTEN BY RICHARD BYROM
2nd XV Report v Bugbrooke
Won 34-17
A good solid performance
Once again due to injuries and first team call ups it was a changed second XV who took the field at Kelham Road on Saturday. In particular it was a welcome return for Matt Brewer who has been out of action for over 3 months.
Newark started really well and after an initial break by Matt Brewer, carried on by some forward drives, the youngster Hugh Falconer scored.
More good play from the home side followed and after a break from Ben Ennals, another of our 17yr olds scored, Rory Williams. Newark were now 12-0 up and in control.
However Bugbrooke had their own ideas and after a mix up in the home side defensive backline an overlap was created for the right winger to score.
This really seemed to galvanise the visitors and from a set piece lineout the blindside winger crashed through and then sent out a lovely pass for the right winger to score again 12-10 to Newark, game on.
Newark responded quickly and effectively and from a misplaced kick to touch the ball was run back by the veteran full back Byrom, a maul was set up which then was driven 30yards forward by the Newark pack and finished off when Rory Williams grabbed his second try of the day.
17-10 to Newark at half time.
With a strong bench available to skipper Staines, changes were made just after half time and from a good break by Dave Garland the short side was exploited and James Stark ‘sold’ an outrageous dummy and scampered in for Newark’s fourth try.
The home side were back on top. Although Bugbrooke stuck to their task well, it was only a matter of time before Newark scored again.
Jonny Statham was next on the score board, Ben Ennals the provider from a break down the blind side.
Newark’s final try of the afternoon was probably their best. It came from persistent forward drive which then allowed the ball to go down the back line to right winger Stark who galloped over for his second try.
Newark 34 Bugbrooke 10.
The final action of the game saw Bugbrookes No 13 break a tackle and make a 30 yard run to the line and so make the final score 34-17.
It had been a good all round performance from Newark’s second string against a well drilled Bugbrooke side.
There were quite a few contenders for Man of the Match- Rory Williams, Dave Shiels, Matt Brewer, James Stark- but it went to scrum half Ben Ennals.
