Newark had several chances to increase the lead but silly mistakes let Paviors ‘off the hook’

REPORT WRITTEN BY RICHARD BYROM

2nd XV V Paviors
Won 19-10

The 2’s are back to winning ways

A home game against local rivals in the Pennant will always bring the best out of a team and Saturday was no exception. Newark produced a much improved performance to beat Paviors in a hard fought encounter at Kelham Road.

In a much changed side from last week - a much stronger team took the field and it was good to see Fotheringham, Harrison, Hill, Primett, Webster and M. Byrom all back playing.

Newark started the game in a very positive way and after 10 minutes some good play by both forwards and backs combined allowed Curtis Marshall to find Mark Byrom in space and Newark were on the score sheet. The half continued to be dominated by the home side and after a great break from centre Richard Bevan the ball went loose and there was Tom Hill on hand to kick the ball through and gather it in to score the second try.

Tom O’Leary added the extra two points.

This lead looked to have increased even further when from a scrum in their own half No 8 Jon Webster broke down the blind side fed Curtis Marshall who beat 2 players and then found Mark Byrom who touched down only for the referee to deem the pass forward.

However shortly afterwards Newark did score. When from a line out, a lovely catch and drive led to James Newman scoring his first senior try for the club. Tom O’Leary added the extra two points.

Half time score 19-0 to Newark.

With a change of ends and the wind in their favour Paviors started the second half in a much more positive fashion and after 5 minutes their No8 found space from a ruck close to the Newark line and crashed over, 19-5.

The home side looked a little shocked and it took them a while to regroup, however gradually they recovered their poise. Some good running from the backs and in the pack, Richard Primett carried the ball really well showing both pace and strength.

With 15 minutes left, Paviors scored a second try to really open the game up. Their No 8 proving once again too strong for the Newark defenders as he powered his way over the line.

Game on!
The game now seesawed from one end of the pitch to the other with neither side really taking any of their opportunities to score as both teams defence held strong.
Eventually with Newark on the attack the final whistle blew and the score Newark 19 Paviors 10.
Man of the match went to Mark Byrom for a great all round performance at No 10, although Jon Webster and youngster James Newman were certainly contenders.

Overall it had been a really good team performance and although the score indicates a close game Newark were worthy winners and with a little more care and concentration in the oppositions 22 it could have been a wider margin
Next week the 2’s are at home against Spalding. Let’s hope for more of the same.
