In the Market for a Half Century

Newark 2nds had the pleasure of playing at home on a great pitch in front of an appreciative home crowd. It was evident that Market had come to do the job on Newark but the home side were just to good on home turf.

The opening exchanges of the game saw both sides trying to mark an early impact on each other which resulted in numerous penalties been conceded with little gain. Newark did seem to get into their stride as Rasen continued to test the whistle at the breakdown. Newark were soon on top and making good territory from some good work up front and pace from the backs, and it was a wonderful combination of 1 – 2 passes between the duo of Max Chapple and Johnny (aviator winged shorts) Marshall who carved the Rasen line apart to open the score with Scotty adding the 2 points from an easy kick following Marshall's dot down under the posts. 7-0.

Rasen responded immediately and put Newark's defence under some intense pressure but as we have seen in recent games Newark don’t like conceding any points. Some bone crushing tackles were made by Newark’s pack on their own line and Rasen found no way through, Nick Barton made a shuddering hit dislodging ball which squirting back into the goal area the Ref called ‘play on’, it found its way to Starky and he was GONE…..the full length of the field clean heels no one was going to catch him. 14-0 with another solid kick from Scotty.

As the first half progressed Newark grew as a team and it was evident Rasen had exhausted the ‘idea cupboard’. As Newark continued to dominate and hold territory in Rasen’s half, the lineout was doing its usual job with Kash and Matthysz controlling the ariel battle. Webby in his last game (AGAIN) personified Newark’s grit, ripping the ball in a maul on the 22 he crashed over the line to extend the score……..21-0 with Johnno kicking a lovely conversion from the 5 metre line out on the left. As half time approached a bit of needle crepted in, clearly Rasen were frustrated at been out classed in most departments, Newark’s physicality was awesome and Chapple helped it along with his chirpy comments!! Newark finished the half with a cracking break on the wing with Sam Dobson making good ground….sadly he fell short of the line and the half ended. 21-0

The second half started with a mid-field grinding battle, Newark proved their worth with the pack showing who had the upper hand particularly in the scrum. Newark eventually broke the in Rasen 22 and Dobson went in to score a great blindside try!! The whistle then blew……..scrum Newark for a high tackle on Dobson!!……..surely advantage Ref??? No score and Rasen cleared their line after turning the ball over. Newark continued to run the game at their pace with the link between Chapple and Scotty working well this allowed the backs to have choices as quick ball opened the Rasen defence, Josh Seabrooke broke the their line for a easy score in the corner. 26-0.

Newark were now ‘In the Market’ for a try fest……….and it came as the crowd gave great support to the huge charges that were coming from Franny who once again was carrying well again to push Rasen on to the back foot, Seabrooke in space grub kicked through a hole in their line and it connected with Dobson and he was in. 31-0 no conversion. Newark continued to please the crowd with some lovely open and quick play, it was this pace that allowed Scotty to make a great break and fire a lovely pass to Starky who went in for his second try of the day 36-0.

Market were broken and even the aggressive chat at the breakdown and scrum provided no concerns to Newark as they simply smashed the pack in the scrum and kept their discipline, waiting for the next opportunity to extend the score further. Seabooke who had put in a useful effort all afternoon and was instrumental in two score already was finally rewarded with a try for himself after finding some width he scored a lovely individual try to take the score to 43-0. Newark weren’t done yet as the half century beckoned, they drove up the field with Lewis Himsworth making some useful carries along with Franny who converted one into a crash over try seconds from the end and Scotty converted 50-0.

Another stunning performance from Newark !
