Sutton Bonington v Newark 2nds

After 160 minutes of rugby without conceding any points Newark suffered their biggest defeat of the season to a well drilled, strong and fit Sutton Bonington.

It was evident that the afternoon would be a long and difficult but Newark started strongly however some poor defending off the 1st phase breakdown allowed the home side to gain the advantage and run in three early tries and they were 21-0 up within 15 minutes!! Newark contested well at the set piece despite the scrum not been particularly well managed by the Ref to the advantage of the home side. Newark had penalty of possession and territory but were unable to light the spark that would get them on the scoreboard, some simple rugby was all that was needed but the final pass, the loss of the ball to a turn over, running with no support meant Sutton had an easy job of defending. With their pace and good hands they broke out covering ground with flowing moves to score, and they did adding 3 more tries before half time taking the score to 38-0 at the break.

Newark came out after half time looking a different side with increased aggression and a positive approach, Sutton discipline slipped and Newark took advantage camping down in the homes sides half for most of the second period only giving up ground to those simple mistakes that crept in again. Sadly Newark despite showing their grit and hitting the defence hard they could not find a way crack the Sutton line. Sutton only paid 3 visits to the Newark half and came away with points on each occasion.

The game ended 54-0, clearly there was an air of disappointment but there was good spirit and character shown by the beaten Newark lads after a tough afternoon with the ‘Gym Bunny Bonington Boys’
