It was like the good old days, 15 players and 1 replacement. (Not seven roll on roll off replacements for Newark, just good old fashioned play it hard and fast with the players we had available). Late calls on the seconds by the 1st team after players calling off at the 11th hour and a suspected Christmas shopping virus resulted in Newark II's starting yet another game with a changed side. However we managed to retain the same second row and back row as the previous week that gave us a feeling of continuity and confidence. Rob Dunning made a return from injury to join the evergreen Matt Cove and speedy Duncan Coote in the front row to complete a mobile experienced and highly committed forward eight, (9, including our one and only replacement, lock, Ben McCarthy)
It took just 5 minutes for Newark to score the first try, a lively Rhys Overland scored in the corner after a strong scrummage gave him the opportunity to surge over the hosts try line. The conversion failed. Score 0-5
The play was a little disjointed as Newark were frustrated by some strange refereeing calls and some concentration lapses. This allowed Lincoln into the game and they won a penalty for “failing to release” and their very competent place kicker converted to pull the score back to 3 – 5.
Newark woke up and applied the pressure and by half time they had replied with 3 further tries, from James Stark, Tom O’Leary and a second by Overland making the score Lincoln 3 Newark 20.
The second half turned into one way traffic with Newark scoring a further 7 tries. Two came from Jamie Sizer, although sore from his Wednesday night appearance; turning out on the wing as we had no back cover, he twice streaked down the left flank to add a further 10 points to Lincoln’s misery. Stark scored yet another fine try and David Fotheringham scored 2 typical number 8 tries. Ben McCarthy added a try of his own after chasing a kick through and Mark Staines scored yet another of his signature dish tries after picking a ball up on his own 10 meters line and sprinting home under the posts. Robin Burton Waring slotted 5 conversions and Lincoln managed to win just 2 penalties in the second half although their star player was their man with the boot and he took his tally to 3 successful kicks thus ending the day Lincoln 9 Newark 65.
Team: Dunning, Cove, AJ, Staines, McCartney, McCarthy, Bartch, Hodnett, Fothringham, Overland, Miller, Sizer, O’Leary, Robin BW, Stark, Byrom R.
