The pitch and the weather was great and both sides showed some fine skills. Newark played with determination and tried to get their backs running but often the passes were too hard or too late and ball hard won was squandered.
A "Garry Owen" high ball had both Byrom and Miller fielding with the inevitable head-on train crash! Byrom recovered but miller had to leave the field and was taken to casualty badly dazed and cut. He has since made a good recovery.
There was no score until the 45th minute when the Derby full back managed to break the line and several tackles to score an unconverted try. 2 minutes later the referee decided it was half time and Derby led 0-5.
Early in the second half Derby won a penalty which was converted. 0-8.
This galvanised Newark and a break in the centre by Joe Cormack created an opportunity that Rogi took on and George Seabrook finished, scoring under the posts. Lewis Strellis converted putting Newark back into the game 7-8.
Newark gave away another kickable penalty and were put further behind 7-11. From the restart Newark attacked strongly and the pressure exerted was rewarded by Lewis Strellis running in a fine try, touching down in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful. In the lead at 12-11 Newark lost a little composure and Derby forced them to defend in their own 22. A crash ball move through the 10/12 channel brought Derby a try next to the uprights, thus they regained the lead 12-18.
A little later Derby counter attacked off a poor kick and an early missed tackle gave their speedy wing threequarter the oportunity to dazzle the cover defence, leaving an isolated Richard Byrom sat on his behind, to score their third try which was converted to leave Newark behind 12 points to 25.
