Success after a poor start

Newark 11 Corsairs 10
Scrappy start with both sides forgetting basics but it's Corsairs who take the opportunities with two early tries.
With confidence high and only Jake and JP making tackles from Newark, we are looking a very average team as Corsairs run in another try. For Newark the quarter can’t end soon enough, but a final minute penalty on the 10m sees the Corsairs big man charge through for the 5th.
We're not tackling, not hitting rucks and no alignment in the backs is leading to overlaps. 0-4 down at the break
The second quarter is a different story
The boys on the side line have clearly been paying attention and seeing the mistakes and opportunities, with the first few minutes much more balanced. There's no panic and the opportunities start coming... with two from George with some strong (but could be straighter / more direct) running. The Corsairs gas man pulls one back before Max dives over. Another from Toby followed by a well-executed kick and catch from Matthew nearly sees him scoring, but his rugby brain tells him it's not on and he very smartly slows and sets.
Half time 5-5
Mixing things up again, we probably field our strangest players but not necessarily in their chosen position. At this age it's good to test players in different roles. The club academies look for 3 core skills - speed, strength and good hands then they retrain players for the gaps that they have. I've seen centres become hookers and back row forwards become wingers....
Anyway....Applied and consistent pressure and control of the rucks sees the backs releasing Thomas from full back on a lovely J line. The backs are doing it right and tries are coming on the outside. Matthew goes over in the corner and some lovely football skills from Max. Corsairs get a couple back and no doubt are up for this despite being in a tough game now.
A quick penalty leads to Thomas going over before Corsairs pull one back with a penalty 10 out. This deceived everyone as they lined up their big man only to shift it wide, smart play 8-8. The final passage of play sees George score in the corner - Newark 1up
Corsairs just won't give up and it's very even (Corsairs’ coach said after the match we were the best team they have faced this season) but it's Corsairs that go over twice first. Matthew returns with his second individual kick and chase and he is justly rewarded this time. He psyches up his teammates with an aptly delivered Jason Robinson "COME ON". Newark one down with a few mins to go but again there is no panic. Ben is orchestrating well at 10. The forwards are puffing hard due to commitment. The tackles are ferocious. Newark are up for this and everyone on the side-line believes it...
Don't know why Toby is on the wing! but who cares as he runs in from 40 meters to level it...
No boy has not given 100% today. It's been a real team effort - guys you need to remember these moments. We look to the leaders and the playmakers (you know who you are) to lift us when we are down or when we have to dig deeper and we dig deep for one last effort to see George score in corner to seal the win. I made the score 12-10 but the ref made it 11-10. Worthy opponents but well done boys, times like this make it a pleasure to coach you.
