Three new vice presidents elected

Club members elected three new vice presidents at the annual meeting in the clubhouse on Monday evening.

The trio are all familiar figures at Kelham Road in long-serving Tim Barker, club treasurer Richard Staniforth and director Matt Cove.

Tim, the club’s director of rugby, began as a youth player in the 1970s and went on to be a successful first team fly half and captain.

Richard, another former player, has made his mark at the club in the last few years as financial director, helping to balance the budgets in the £1.5 million clubhouse project which was opened last September.

And, finally, but not least, Matt is a former first team hooker who has become a hard-working club director and mini coach. He has also helped back up the first-team coaching group in recent seasons.

All together the trio must have contributed nearly 90 years of service to the club.

Club members re-elected president John Coles and chairman Andrew Fearn.

Directors for season 2019-20: John Coles (president), Andrew Fearn (chairman), Richard Derry (vice chairman), David Godfrey (secretary). Directors: Richard Staniforth, David Duddles, Mark Staines, Tim Barker, Alan Staines, Matt Cove, Adam Doran.

In his report to members, the President said he was honoured to lead the club in its centenary season which starts in September.

John commented:

“The 2018/19 Season was my first as President. And now it is an honour in this our Centenary year to hold this role and embrace the whole of Newark Rugby Union Football Club from the first XV right down to the Mini and Youth.

“We do have a wonderful Club, with wonderful team spirit and wonderful facilities. We should all embrace this in the manner in which it is delivered and use it to the full extent it offers.

“The last Season has had its moments but for me the spirit of our club holds good with friendship, fun and the rugby continues to be the bedrock together with our fantastic new Clubhouse…”
