Our golfers have had a pretty busy month!

#######

With two charity days, plus the NRUFC Open fund raiser, to support alongside their regular competitions our golfers have had a pretty busy month!

Day one, on the 13th May, was Belton Park GC's Charity Am Am, originally a fund raiser for NRUFC 's John Lawrence . Now 35 years later a charity day that is still going strong and has raised well in excess of £220k for a variety of worthy causes.

This year's event attracted over 40 teams and raised an impressive £7500 to be shared between English & Welsh Blind Golf and the Parkinson's Disease charity. A sum in no small part due to the efforts of auctioneer Charles Hine , whose persuasive skills added £3200 to the pot.

Golf Society members were well in attendance with Paul Adams and Andrew Hounsfield winning the Hounsfield Trophy as the Society's leading entrants.

Only two weeks later it was up to Thonock GC Gainsborough for the NRUFC Open. Now in its 29th year and another popular long standing event.

Played as a Shotgun Stableford format, 21 teams enjoyed a great day's golf seriously enhanced by an extremely generous prize table and the legendary carvery meal.

Winners were Duncan Coote. Brian Davis. Richard Knock & George Sutton with an impressive 90pts.

Well done gents, even if somewhat overshadowed by the achievement of GS big hitter, James Barker, who shot a Hole in One on a 380yd Par 4 hole. Incredible !!

To close on this one with a few well deserved 'thank you' s. To long standing organisers Dicky and Thommo, and their assistants, in producing such a well run day. To John Clarke and his Ping team likewise. Always great hospitality ; always a great atmosphere.

This year's event raised almost £3k for the NRUFC Junior Section . An impressive sum but let's make next year's Newark RUFC 30th Open even bigger and better.

See you there.

Finally for now we come to our third such golf day in only 4 weeks - The Matt Hampson Foundation Golf Day at Belton Park GC on June 10th.

As many of you will know, like Newark's John Lawrence, Matt Hampson suffered serious life changing injuries playing rugby. In his case at Leicester RUFC. To his great credit, although still wheelchair bound, Matt has been increasingly active in organising support for victims of a wide range of injuries suffered by sports people on and off the sports field.

Having visited the Matt Hampson Foundation premises, and seen the work done there, Golf Society member, Pete Thacker, a long term supporter of Leicester RUFC, decided to support their fund raising efforts in some way. Last year he did so by means of a sponsored dawn to dusk non-stop golf day.

This year it was last week's highly successful charity golf day (No.1 !)

Held at Belton Park GC the event attracted a promising 20 teams, both local and from the Foundation and Leicester RUFC.

The winners, collecting their prizes from Ireland & Leicester's Geordan Murphy
,with an impressive 93 points, were BPGC members Ged O'Reilly & team. But not far behind were our GS four of Gary Briggs. Mark Dingley. Colin Smith. & Jim Sneddon with 88pts. Their prizes being presented by Newark's Dusty Hare.

All in all a promising start for this new event with 20 teams raising £5k for this most worthy cause. Again, thanks are due to Charles H. on the gavel, whose efforts amassed well over £2k.

Well done Pete Thacker & team.

And, of course, many thanks to all of you for your support.

Hoping to see you at all three events next year.

Nick M.
