Red and White Under 10's squads travel to Kesteven in two hard fought contests

Both the Red and the quickly developing White squads travelled to Kesteven in two evenly matched games on a fresh and brisk Sunday morning on the outskirts of Grantham.

Red Squad; Finn, Freddie, Oscar, Elliot, Cody, Ethan, Alexander, Joe R and Jonah

With the weather against them cold, windy and drizzle in the air the lads showed great character as they lined up to start the first of two games.

Kesteven came out of the blocks quickly from the kick off with strength and speed which put a sleepy Newark on the back foot, the lads quickly re organised and regained composure. Closing the channels down and with determination and great defence work started to break down Kesteven pushing them back into their own half.

The lads increased the pressure and dealt with an equally structured K's side which tested the stamina of each player. Kesteven took advantage of a couple of handling errors and poor ball control which enabled long single breakaway runs for the line which Newark dealt with most demonstrating skill in the cover tackle. Newark pinned Kesteven in there half of the field for a majority of both matches due to strong defensive lines and quickness in re alignment, stepping up the defensive line pace, determination and hard work repeatedly pounding the Kesteven line with force in the second match controlling the game.

Displaying some great rugby all the team pulled together and kept their ground against a good well organised Kesteven team. All in all a frustrating game for players, coaches and spectators but a great team performance.

White squad; Lewis, Tommy, Joe D, Alfie, Liti, Rudi, Tom, Harry and Harvey

Character, teamwork and enthusiasm shone through in two challenging games.

Today’s White squad was primarily made up of players who started playing rugby when they joined Newark within the last 12 months. However, while they may lack match experience, they more than made up for it with sheer energy and character.

It was a cold and wet morning at Kesteven which made ball handling tough for both sides on pitches that were definitely “heavy”. Some weaknesses in our tackling, plus being late to the ruck, allowed Kesteven to get the upper hand in the first half. After the break our play improved noticeably and the players came off at full time rightly proud of the way they’d upped their game.

The second game was one that demanded character and our players showed it. It was one of those games where it would have been very easy to get frustrated and give up. Instead our players picked themselves up and kept at it. It’s great to see young players really support each other when games are not going your way.

Special mention has to go to Liti whose rucking in the second game was outstanding. One incredible drive allowing Newark to score the sort of try that makes coaching really worthwhile and brings smiles to players and spectators alike.

As per Newark's Mini and Youth players Charter, the critical thing at all mini age groups is enjoyment – not winning! Our job as coaches is to develop players with a real passion for the game that will see them enjoy and progress through mini, youth and ultimately senior rugby. Looking at all the smiling faces at the end – and hearing the applause of proud parents and supporters – said it all. The White squad will continue to develop and be back for more! Outstanding team performance, every week moving forward.

Another away fixture against Mansfield next week and training at Kelham road for those not selected to play.
