Spills and thrills in seven-try contest

Saturday November 26th
Regional 2 North Midlands
Newark 22 - Moseley Oak 29

Newark lost out on an afternoon of thrills and spills in a Kelham Road clash which brought seven tries, the final one going to Moseley Oak in the last minute.

It was a frustrating contest for a Newark team eager to continue the attacking ways which had brought three wins and a draw since mid-October.

However, the visitors were always dangerous and overturned a second-half deficit of 15-7 to grab victory at the death.

Newark led 8-7 at half-time through an opening try from wing Scott Edmed and a penalty by Alex Scott.

A low-key affair got better after the interval when Newark looked to have taken hold of the encounter by putting a good period of phase play together for a try from front-rower Jed Chapple, who has re-joined following a stint at Syston.

Scott added the conversion to increase the lead only for Moseley Oak to grab a try back when a player dashed through a ruck to score easily for a converted score.

That left Newark hanging onto a one point lead which lasted only a few minutes before Moseley Oak returned to grab a third try for a 15-19 lead.

A penalty five minutes from time increased the visiting margin to set up an exciting finale.

Newark celebrated loudly when a smart attack down the right gave Josh Ashe the chance to dash over for a try by the posts, the wing racing onto Scott’s chip ahead.

The full-back converted and Newark thought they had at least grabbed a draw at 22-22, but, like several times in the contest, the home team conceded possession too easily and allowed Moseley Oak a winning try and conversion by the posts.

It was a disappointing end for the home contingent made worse by a red-card exit for flanker Sean Denning.

The match marks the halfway stage and Newark’s good form since October has earned a satisfactory eighth place, seven points clear of bottom-placed Old Silhillians in a competitive league.

Leaders Leek are three points clear of Melbourne where Newark drew two weeks’ ago.

Newark are away next Saturday (Dec 3) against Nuneaton Old Edwardians, who won 15-13 at Kelham Road earlier in the season.
It’s a 2.15pm kick off.
