A low-flying Bomber stole the Show

Newark 3rds/4ths 10 36th Royal Engineers Regiment 63

A match with a difference at Kelham Road where play was interrupted to watch a fly past by a Lancaster Bomber!

It was all part of a tribute to Corporal Ivano ‘Sean’ Violino who grew up in Newark, and was killed aged 29 in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan, in September 2007 when an improvised explosive device detonated beneath the vehicle he was travelling in.

Sean was serving in the Engineers and some of his old colleagues were in the team who proved too strong for the club’s 3rd/4th teams, 63-10.

Newark never gave up and grabbed a first-half try from prop Lee Gillatt while newcomer Craig Fisher scored a try on his first appearance for the club in the second half.

The match raised money for Armed Force's charities SSAFA, which provides welfare and support for those serving, veterans and their families, and the Newark Patriotic Fund that provides similar support locally.

It was a good afternoon of rugby with plenty of action off-field including a 1940s-style singer, a bouncy castle centre plus that low-flying Bomber…
