Our discipline had put us ahead

Away v East Retford 2s

Pennant

Won 17-29

Trys: Briggs-Price, Codd, Dixon, Tinsley, Holmes.

Cons: Lee 2

After losing by only a few points at home to East Retford earlier in the season we knew if we went to them with a fairly strong side we could redress the balance. That said lack of backs was going to be a problem with the late loss of our full back and only one centre available. As has become the norm this season we filled in the gaps with willing volunteers/pressed men and got on with it.

We got off to a good start with an early try from Zac Briggs-Price. the second row playing in the centres forced his way over after tireless work from the forwards. No extra points from the boot of 10 for the day and skipper Tom Lee but it was a tight angle. It was the forwards who struck next with a lineout catch and drive. Trigger took the ball from the ever straight arm of Dick White and off we trundled towards the line. It was new boy Grant Dixon having best game for us so far who got the touch down for an 8 man try. Again no extras from an even tighter angle but our opponents didn't quite know what had hit them.

We'd come out of the blocks like whats-his-name Bolt and we weren't done as we scored straight from the next restart. Young Josh Codd started and finished a move as the back row took the high ball and set off weaving in and out of the oncoming forwards. He was tackled by the winger but had some back up and the ball was recycled several times before he got the ball again to jink through to score in the corner. Great play by the former colt who had another great game.

After conceding a try by East Retfords big pack it was returning player Joe Tinsley who scored next for us. The former prop was playing in the centres and after some initial handling problems made a great impact on the game. His tackling was good and always made yards with ball in hand (once he’d caught it). His try was quite simple but more importantly it was under the posts so no mistake from the skippers boot. A good job really as East Retford scored another try with more of less the last move of the half.

We lead 10-22 at half time and a relaxed half time talk pointed out that our discipline had put us ahead as our opponents had been getting the refs back up while we'd just got on with the task. It was an untidy game but that was working for us for once. We were getting the rub of the green for a change.

The early part of the second half was a tight affair with both side feeding on the other teams mistakes. Having had one yellow card in the first half our hosts managed to get two more in the second half which was lucky for them as one should have been a red for a sliding tackle. Would have been a red in football. Down to 13 players they kicked for clearance but it went straight down full back Callum Holmes throat. He ran from deep in our half, slipping tackles and wrong footing defenders all the way the score under the posts. Fantastic try and more than deserved from the hard working young lad.

East Retford had the last word point wise but we'd done our talking by coming to a hostile place and keeping our heads, playing the rugby and making the best of an uneven pitch. Our level headedness and total team work paid dividends.

Names of note include Ben Pindar having a good game coming on at hooker and Dick White playing till the end and possibly being late for work. Sorry mate. Josh Duggan had a great game making yards every time he picked up the ball and another new lad Lee Dentith coming on at no8 making big hits. Rob Garland had another good showing and scrum half Gaz Morgan had a great game and was in everything. That being said it was the team performance in general that was so pleasing. Everyone played for eachother and put a real shift in until the final whistle.

More of the same next week boys
