A leg sapping and chilly morning of rugby

Written by Alan Staines and Richard Marshall
Checked by Ann Gooden

After a mix up with the number of pitches available at Nottm Casuals we eventually took one squad to play at Valley road, Beeston, leaving the remainder at Kelham Road for training.

Similar to Newark the Casuals pitches are extremely water logged and cutting up meaning the boys were in for a leg sapping and chilly morning of rugby in the double header against hosts Casuals and visitors Ilkeston.

A small squad of 10 travelled, leaving a good number at Kelham Road (16) to have a worthy training session.

Coaches; Alan, Nigel and Richard

Players: Noah, Joe D, Reuben, Joe R, Tom, Harry, Alexander, Lewis, Henry B and Joshi.

CASUALS v. NEWARK
The 1st game we started well, with some good tackling, passing and support play. Rucking seemed to be only done with our arms not shoulders, so Casuals managed to compete at the breakdown, which the guys rectified in the 2nd half. A messy game of rugby hampered by the wet and slippery conditions resulting in numerous knock on's.

Lesson of the game was to play to the referees whistle and not assume the game was going to stop when there was an infringement! All in all we showed signs of playing some good rugby in challenging conditions, pleased that everyone contributed and got involved. Joshi and Noah both ran well and moved the ball into space linking up well with Alexander, Lewis and Tom to exploit the space outside.

NEWARK v. ILKESTON
2nd game was a quick turnaround against a fresh Ilkeston, who had a better structured defence than the 1st game. The boys started to communicate better led by Henry, Reuben and Joshi and there was also more support play from everyone than the 1st game. Ilkeston competed well at the breakdown with some good counter rucking. Early into the game Alexander injured his knee meaning we had no subs!

Pleasing to see the lads put training into a game, we constantly kept putting pressure on to Ilkeston, as soon as they got the ball the boys pushed up as a defensive line with excellent communication. This enabled us to pin them back for much of the game and resulted in them trying to kick the ball out of their 22. Joe D had a great game as full back catching and running the ball back repeatedly. An isolated missed tackle in their 22 resulted in a disappointing try and tired legs at the end of the game.

Lesson of the game was that if you apply defensive pressure as a team and don’t let the opposition play, they can't and will make mistakes resulting in easy tries! Just ask the poacher Joshi!

Player of the week could have been awarded to the team, really pleased with the way the lads played together today, awarded to Joe R for excellent rucking and competing for the ball at the breakdown.

Training as usual down Kelham Road next week.
