Hard work and self belief pays off!!

A first outing on the main pitch for Newark Women for our NLD semi-final match and what a match it was! From the first whistle the team got straight to work receiving the kick-off and charging back at the opposition. We connected well early on and kept the ball in hand with forwards and backs linking up. However, a few scrappy tackles and some direct running from Amber Valley led to their first try. Frustrated by letting in an early try we got back in the game quickly from the restart and played some good flowing rugby in their half. We used the boot to gain territory and the forwards pod work was excellent, resulting in a try by Ella. Not satisfied with one try we again dominated in the next phase of play, winning rucks and taking advantage of a few penalties we found ourselves close to the try line and this time, it was through the hands of the strong running backs and Ella crossed for her second. Half time score 10-7 to Newark.

The second half began in Amber Valley’s favour and they came back fighting with an early try through the middle, 10-12 to them. However, the relentless work by Newark’s powerful forwards and a few key lineouts meant we kept possession and took the ball on pass by pass. We were rewarded for our efforts and a clear line break by center Sophie, whose try secured Newark the lead and was converted by Ella, 17-12. Heading into the final moments, both teams were suffering from tired legs. Despite the fatigue we managed to put together end-to-end rugby; speedy wings taking the ball on and some kicks to find the space.

However, with five minutes to go, Newark lost a little concentration, slipped a few tackles and Amber Valley found the try line, 17-19 the score. But Newark did not lose heart with two minutes to play, we kicked off quickly, regathered the ball and cantered to the try line. The opposition made a few last-ditch tackles, but we recycled the ball in amongst the forwards and were finally rewarded. Vicky dived low and hard, and we scored! Elation from the Newark team, as the final whistle blew, a first win 22-19.

A massive team performance by everyone; taking the confidence and skills we have been learning through the previous matches and applying it today showed the difference. A total belief in ourselves, those around us and the team enabled us to take the victory. Thanks to our coaching team and supporters for cheering us on.
