The latest from David Godfrey

As we move into July, we reach the last month of our financial year. It’s no secret that it hasn’t been an easy one . Now the prolonged dry spell has taken its toll, causing real problems for Pitches 3, 4, 5 and 6. That said, we count ourselves fortunate compared to many amateur clubs across the UK, where reports of dying pitches suggest a real risk of grounds being unplayable come September. We’re in a much better position, and we’re grateful for that.

I have to say a special word of thanks to our irrigation team, whose work has been nothing short of brilliant. The hours they put in at the club, often unseen, have made a huge difference through this difficult spell, and we are extremely grateful to these brilliant people for everything they do.

On a brighter note, pre-season training is now well underway, with our Youth teams also getting started this week — always a great sign that the new season is close.

The fixtures for the new campaign are out. Relegation still stings, but there’s a silver lining: the chance to renew old rivalries with the likes of Southwell, Mansfield, Lincoln, Market Rasen and Spalding means Kelham Road should see some big crowds this year. First up is Southwell, where both our First and Second XV will host our close neighbours. Table reservations are now being taken — it’s shaping up to be a fun day, so watch this space for more details.

We also held our AGM earlier in the month, and thank you to everyone who came along. It’s already looking like appointing David Pick as our new President was a great decision — his and Theresa’s story has attracted over 20,000 views online, a new record for the club. It just pipped chef Matt’s news that he and our kitchen have been shortlisted for the RFU Kitchen of the Year competition — a brilliant achievement in its own right. Well done, Matt!

The presentations from the AGM are still available on our website, and we’re happy to answer any questions you may have.

Our new sponsorship offerings have now launched too. It’s early days, but we’re thrilled with the initial response — again, do get in touch if you have any questions. Next week, you will also be able to read how you can Apply for Tickets for the 2027 Six Nations Tournament.

Finally, thank you all once again for your continued support over the last twelve months.

Wishing everyone a happy summer break — see you all for the new season.

Yours in Rugby
David Godfrey
