Congratulations to the women’s squad for finishing top of their league – the first season they have competed in the RFU competition.

The RFU have confirmed this week that the team have finished top of NC3 Midlands North by a point from Lutterworth.

It is expected the team will be promoted and the section is aiming to field a 2nd XV in the Inner Warrior Series next season.

The development of the squad has been terrific to follow since they started out two summers ago. It’s been a great all round effort and congratulations go to all the players, coaches and helpers. The squad has won 10 league games and drawn one to beat Lutterworth by a point to the top spot.

The Leicestershire team won the first match between the teams in October but by the time of the return at Kelham Road, the Newakers had improved so quickly they posted a 24-5 win.

It was all part of an eight-match unbeaten run which helped fire the team to the top.

Though the team lost at Market Bosworth last Sunday, the bonus point gained was sufficient to keep them at the top.

The squad play at Gainsborough this Sunday in a friendly, kick off 2pm.
