Geoffrey’s association with Newark RUFC stretched back to his teenage years, when George Pollard knocked on the door of his family home in Lime Grove and persuaded a 17-year-old Geoffrey — 6’3” and 14 stone, but with no rugby experience — to come and play.

He went on to become a mainstay of the second row, playing alongside the likes of Mike Lockwood, George Jeffcott and Frank Latham, and was part of the great Newark side that lifted the Nottinghamshire Knock-Out Cup, beating Old Westbridgfordians 14–3 in the 1967 final at Beeston.

Away from the Club, Geoffrey became something of a polymath: a solicitor, businessman and broadcaster, an original member of Antiques Roadshow, and presenter of ITV’s Something to Treasure in the 1980s. He chaired numerous heritage organisations, sat on the Council of the Society of Antiquaries, was Chairman of the Byron Society, Master of several London Livery Companies, and served as Sheriff of the City of London in 2004.
Alongside all this, he remained a generous supporter of Newark RUFC as a player, member and sponsor.
