10th April 1979 – 21st July 2025
Aged 46
Newark Rugby Club is heartbroken to share the news of the passing of one of our most loved and unforgettable personalities, Satini Apete Colati Saini, affectionately known to us all as "Big Pete".
Born in Suva, Fiji, Pete’s larger-than-life character left a mark everywhere he went. A gifted rugby player, he proudly represented Fiji at the U19 World Cup in Zimbabwe in 1998. He went on to join the British Army in 2000, serving with distinction for five years – first in Germany with 3RHA, then in Kirton Lindsey with the Welsh Gunners, where his rugby prowess flourished.
Pete's rugby journey brought him to Scunthorpe, Lincoln, and ultimately Newark RUFC, where his strength, skill, and sheer presence on the pitch became legendary. He played with fire, but always with honour – the kind of player who might knock you down with a hit, then lift you up with a smile.
Off the field, Pete was even greater. A devoted father to Litiana, Rockie Sienna, and Bonnie, he adored his children and lived for their happiness. He was the heartbeat of any room – loud, funny, and full of warmth. A friend to many, a brother to his teammates, and a man you couldn’t help but love.
Pete is survived by his loving siblings Semiti Jnr, Sera, Tale, Mareca, Kaci, and Tarogi.
His funeral will be held at Norton Disney Church, with his final resting place nearby. The wake will follow at The Green Man, where stories, songs, and memories will honour a life well lived. More detail will follow.
Rest easy, Big Pete – you were one of a kind.
