Dan will be sadly missed by everyone at Newark RUFC

Newark RUFC is saddened to announce the death of Dan Godfrey, who passed away on Sunday 11th October. A solicitor and businessman, Dan was a long-standing and much-valued member of the club, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Early days at Newark

Dan's association with the club began in the 1960s. Characteristically modest about his playing career, he would say he "reached the dizzy heights as 3rd XV captain". He played alongside the likes of Perks and Bob Benbow, and many of those who shared a changing room with him will remember him fondly.

Helping to build the first clubhouse

Dan's contribution went well beyond the pitch. When the club's first clubhouse was being built, he borrowed a lorry and transported sand and gravel to Kelham Road. It was a practical, hands-on gesture that typified his commitment to the club, and the foundations he helped lay still serve the club today.

Supporting the club through business

Dan's support continued through his business life. Together with his business partners John Bamford and John Coles, he brought Wendgreen Ltd on board as a sponsor of the club. Wendgreen remains a sponsor to this day, a lasting link to his generosity.

A rugby family

Rugby has run through the Godfrey family for generations. Dan's sons, David and Julian, both represented Newark at senior level. His grandsons Haydn and Dan are currently playing for the club's senior sides, while grandson Hugo came through the mini and youth sections.

Dan will be sadly missed by everyone at Newark RUFC. The club sends its deepest condolences to his wife Irene, his children David, Julian and Helen, his grandchildren and the wider Godfrey family.
