NICK MALTBY rip

Nick joined the Club in 1963 and soon became a leading light both on the pitch as an uncompromising lock forward and off the pitch. He was 1st XV captain in 1966, 1967 and 1968 as well as representing Nottinghamshire.

For those of you interested in the history of Newark RUFC may we refer you to Newark’s History Booklet in the Information Tab on the club’s website (Newark’s History booklet).
There is an article authored by Nick describing the long-standing connection between the Magnus School and Newark RUFC.
As of much interest is the article by Kieron Peacock who was captain of Magnus and a flamboyant fly half. When Kieron played fly half for Newark 1st XV under Nick’s captaincy as a seventeen-year-old he had the temerity to actually pass the ball when not in the opposition twenty-five.
Nick had one of the Newark pack engineer an ‘injury’ to bring a halt in play during which Nick spoke to Kieron as follows: ‘If you kick the ball and pass it occasionally only when we’re in their twenty five, these blokes over there, pointing to the Newark pack, including me, will look after you. If you try to prat around anymore with all this fancy crap, not only will those bu***rs in the red shirts trample all over you, we will as well. This isn’t the Magnus now, and the fly half doesn’t pass unless I say so.’

He is also very probably the only player to have played for all six teams that the Club used to put out.
When Nick retired, he famously had a letter published in the Daily Telegraph which said, ‘I felt it was time to retire when the valuables bag was half-full of earrings!’

Off the pitch he was instrumental in raising funds via rock concerts, carnivals, discos, song festivals, donkey derbies, frog racing and fishing competitions.

Ever the Corinthian Nick took over the NRUFC Cricket Society in 1964 and in 1970 founded the NRUFC Golf Society, both of which thrive today.
