Great result for the Newark Rugby Club Cricket Section with a fine victory over Newark RM CC, the drama played out "just over the road"

Peter Mason writes:

Skipper Gelsthorpe (R) was missing so the veteran spinner was called in to take charge at the last moment.
Shall we stride to the centre to toss a coin with James Faulkner or is it easier to just walk into their changing room and ask 'do you want to bat or bowl'?
We'll have a bowl they say and so it's back to break the news to our lads.
We're batting and as we've got some new young rugby talent on board in the shape of Jed Chapple and Alex Scott, Jed will open with Biscuit.
Two balls later Jed with his broken bat is back in the hutch, not that he used it much apart from taking guard.
Out strides Alex and they start turning 0s into 1s and 1s into 2s and long hops into 4s.
The score rattles along before Alex misses a straight one and is bowled for 46, very much in the style of his father Nick Scott so that he avoids having to buy a jug.
Andrew Sears then takes up the mantle with plenty of encouragement from son Owen who can't wait until he is old enough to play for us.
35 or thereabouts each from the Sears boys brings us to 132-2, a commanding score at any level after 12 overs.
Our skipper has now arrived as we set out to see if we have enough on the board - and duly takes charge.
Nigel Wheeler has first go and keeps things tight-ish, Evergreen Mason Snr is invited to open from the other end and you can see the eyes light up from the Newark batsmen.
6 or 7 singles suggests they are running scared and so 13-0 off two overs sees the home side already behind the clock.
Nigel then deceives their opener with a slow dipping straight ball and then at the other end the Veteran sends Charlie Haughton on his way with a low dipping quicker straight one that just has enough momentum to disturb the bails.
Skipper asks whether I would like another or retire on a high?
Delighted to let my old mate Michael Bossart, the second oldest player in the side, take his turn and soon another wicket falls.
Rick Geatrell at the other end holds a screaming C&B and it is looking grim for the hosts.
When Gary Dickinson takes a couple of smart catches behind the stumps, the second off surprise bowler Antony Samson the match is firmly in our hands as they trudge off having reached just about half of our score.
In the bar afterwards there are a distinct lack of home players wishing to take wine with us and so it is time for us to depart and await the rematch in a few weeks’ time.
