Congratulations to the club’s under-17s for winning their age group Notts Cup on Wednesday night. A 46-15 win follows the success of the under-14s and a remarkable tie for the under-16s in their finals last weekend.
The under-17s continued the winning ways of the colts, who won the Notts, Lincs & Derbys title in March, by defeating Paviors 46-15 at Mansfield.
And the squad did it the hard way by conceding two early tries before turning a 10-0 deficit into a win by seven tries to three.
The young Newarkers played some entertaining rugby especially in the second half when they finished very strongly.
Newark led 17-10 at the break having overturned that early deficit thanks to tries from Monty Mullins, Lenny Coen and Elliot Ball.
An early second-half try from Coen stretched the lead before some good defence denied Paviors twice.
After that Newark pulled away through some excellent attacking rugby – Toby Waller, Aaron Walker and Evan Marshall adding tries. Robbie Scoular kicked four conversions while there was also a penalty try awarded as well.
On Sunday, the under-14s had triumphed over Sleaford at Derby, 52-12. Flynn Catt contributed three tries and four conversions. The other scorers were Sam Thompson, Toby Scott, Blake Whittaker and Henry Both (2). Thompson also kicked two conversions.
The most tense match was the 36-36 draw the under-16s played out against Kesteven at Kelham Road.
Newark scored in the final play of the game to secure the draw after seeing Kesteven retake the lead only minutes before.
The teams couldn’t be separated on number of tries scored, conversions or penalties so were crowned joint champions!
The points were scored by Jack Audas (1 try), Oliver Bainbridge (1 try), Nick Oldacre (2 tries), Sid Harris (1 try), Ben Doubell (2 conversions) and Matthew Edmonds (1 penalty and 2 conversions).
Head coach Stuart Edmonds writes: “However, this was a result that was the outcome of the efforts of all 22 match day squad members not just those who scored the points. Every one of them showed impressive levels of commitment, skill and effort on a hot, sunny, April afternoon.
“They were supported, encouraged and kept hydrated by other squad members who hadn’t been included in the match day 22. This combined effort from all of them left supporters, parents and coaches reflecting on all the group had achieved in the past ten years but also all that mini and junior rugby had given them and how they had developed as both individuals and a team.
“Many of the squad attend schools that don’t play rugby, and a significant number are direct products of Newark Rugby Club’s schools programme.
“To finish as joint winners of the NLD Cup after a season where the team only lost one game feels a fitting finale to their junior rugby journey and hopefully sets them up for success as they move into colts rugby.”
