Strong tackling and great defensive work held Belper at bay

REPORT WRITTEN BY MARK DOBB

Saturday November 11th

NEWARK WOMEN XV 19 v 22 BELPER LADIES XV

On a perfect day for rugby, Kelham Road was treated to a fine display of women’s rugby, in front of a large crowd of supporters, the women donned the blue and white for the first time!

The squad was made up of mainly new players to the great sport, but it was great to see 4 of the players having come through the junior ranks stepping out in the team, with a female match official too!

It was decided by both teams to play twenty minutes quarters, to allow for rotation of players and to set goals for the team.
Playing 20 min quarters to allow for rotation and goal setting for the players, the first quarter saw Belper, a more experienced team, receive the ball from kick off and immediately Newark where under pressure.

However, strong tackling and great defensive work held them at bay. Newark had moments of attacking with the ball, but this was quickly extinguished by the Belper team, or little mistakes caused by pressure and lack the of game knowledge. The opposition capitalised on this and scored three tries and one conversion.

0- 17

The team gathered at the break, spoke about the next phase of the game, and took on board the next message.

Still smiling and never down hearted the team started to gain some momentum.
With less mistakes, the women started to put Belper under pressure, linking up phases of play between the pack and backs. Creating breaks and moments of brilliance, but with more knowledge and awareness these could have been opportunities to score.

Unfortunately, Belper where the next team to score making the most of rare mistake. Not to be downhearted Newark spoke about the positives behind the posts and immediately set about scoring their first try just before the break, with this being converted.

7-22.

Refreshed from the oranges and reflecting on the positives the team’s confidence grew. The third quarter was a completely different contrast to the team that started. Taking the ball on with confidence and improving support around the break down area and break aways.
Now it was Belper turn to be put under pressure. This resulted in two further tries for the women one being converted. 19-22.

A final quarter was not possible as Belper with no subs had given their lot and were sustaining a few minor injuries.

The final Score 19 – 22, but from 22 – nil down Newark scored 19 unopposed points, a great effort.

The whole game was played with a tremendous spirit and the enthusiastic crowd recognised how the team grew during this encounter.

The referee allowed the game to flow and the women to play and learn with great control and directions to both teams.
