Newark 24 V Lutterworth 5
On a beautiful day for rugby in front a large crowd the women put on a show against the league leaders. Not the normal flowing rugby but a defensive, endurance show of attrition.
Newark receiving the ball first where soon put under pressure as both teams went at each other with high quality defensive and great cohesion and continuity.
The team showed today how far they had come in their development from the offset. Not once taking a backwards step. As they continued to run the ball through hands and up the middle interacting together and creating space for others.
Crunch as the thundering tackles went in time after time with neither team wanting to give way. The first twenty minutes was played between the 22s. Until that moment when a gap become available.
Ella, our trusty scrum half, found that rare occasion to snape around the base of a ruck to force her way over that elusive try line. All credit to the pack who worked hard all day to give this opportunity. Conversion missed.
It wasn’t long before Dee playing out of position showed her strength and pace as she burst through the smallest gap beating a few players on her way to the try line and under the posts. Conversion successful.
Half time 12- 0 and few changes a foot.

The second half was much the same as both sides smashed each other around the pitch and with the game ebbing and flowing. We had to wait until those opportunities arose and as we snapped upon a mistake and turned the ball over. Throwing it out and getting the backs to show their pace. Eventually Daisy got her hands on it and there was only one outcome. Try in the corner and a little beathing space. 17- 0 conversion missed.
As the defensive line tired a few more gaps appeared, and Dee once again burst through and under the posts to extend the score line and with the conversion being successful the score grew. 24 – 0
This did not deter the Lutterworth team as they continued to batter our defensive and if not for a couple of last-ditch tackles could have pulled back more points. Eventually they scored out wide for a well-deserved try. 24- 5
Full credit to Lutterworth as the score line was never comfortable and they never stopped throughout this contest.
The defence from both sides today was exceptional and the crowd stated this from within the clubhouse. The whole team have come so far, and this shows we have the skills and now the grunt to compete.
The pack worked tirelessly against their counter parts and all need a mention but Michelle got Forward of the game.
Opposition player of the game was Georgina, a constant menace going forwards and in defensive, with outstanding last- ditch tackles, stopping the Lutterworth team getting back into the game earlier.
Back of the game was Daisy, showing her pace out wide and taking her opportunity but also her strength in defensive, the smallest player but showing that size doesn’t matter with those crunching tackles.
